In Case You’re Wondering ….

Just to dispel any rumors or mis-apprehensions that may be percolating around:  It is true that, in keeping with common practice, I’ll be closing out my contractual agreements with the Board this summer.  Why?  As I indicated in my note to the Board:

When UU churches in transition experience different interim ministry styles during Year One and Year Two, this variety strengthens the search and settlement process – by placing more ministry styles on the congregation’s radar screens.  There are many success stories.  Last year I was the second of two quite different interim ministers at a UU church in south Florida.  Their phenomenal success in their search and settlement process is powerful testimony.

So rest assured:  All is well.  Your Board is fully in touch with the best expertise – namely Ian Evison and John Weston – so that Year Two will build upon this year’s many successes.   In the next “Parish News” I’ll spell out, in a bit more detail, how this balance between continuity and novelty, between tradition and experimentation, is so crucial in making for a successful ministerial search and settlement.

By the way:  The purpose of yesterday’s all-church workshop addresses directly the search / settlement work by asking:  What qualities of belonging matter most to us?  What are the roots that hold us close, and the wings that may set us free?

The work continues.   I thank you for the privilege of serving you during this exciting transition time.

Rev. Dave Johnson, Interim Senior Minister, 2007-2008
